“They were very curious, every day Avenida Colón stopped when they left their house,” said the people watching the work of the police in the house on the busy Merida street where yesterday the dead bodies of an elderly couple were found.
The couple, Juan Manuel Campos Cáceres, 90 years old, and Lucely Peniche Pasos, 87, lived alone in the house marked with the number 502 on Avenida Colón. Their large home was named the “Quinta Santa Cecilia”, probably in honor of the patron saint of musicians since Don Juan Manuel was part of the Band of the State and the Yucatan Symphony Orchestra from 1975 to 1982.
On Thursday May 5, shortly after three o’clock in the afternoon, the couple’s grandchildren came to the house, entered and did not find them. But the couple’s two cars, a 1956 Mercedes Benz, which Don Manuel bragged about because it belonged to Pedro Infante, and a Jeep, also very old, were in the residence.
By going to one of the rooms at the end of the large house, they found two bodies, already decomposed. They immediately notified the Ministry of Public Security.
Police cordoned off the house to initiate the investigation; the man died from stab wounds, the woman from asphyxiation, authorities said.
Within half an hour the place was full of agents of the Specialized Crime Scene of the SSP and criminologist experts of the Attorney General, who reviewed every corner for clues that would lead to the person or persons responsible.
“They had been watching them,” commented one person who said she was a relative. “Five days ago they came in to rob them, and the last we spoke with them was three nights ago.”
Video from surveillance cameras of the Hotel Presidente Intercontinental Merida, an adjoining building to where the crime occurred, were reviewed.
The videos indicated that the killer may be an employee of the hotel.
The bodies were to be transferred to the Medical Examiner for an autopsy, while the Attorney General of the State of Yucatan has opened an investigation.
Thursday Avenida Colón was closed at 62nd Street, but now it was not because the couple was leaving their hacienda, like every morning, rather so that agents of the Attorney General could work without any problems on site.
