CANCUN, Q. Roo — Cancun’s streets turned violent again this week, as gunfire erupted in an attempted armed robbery of a currency exchange house, and in a separate incident a 29-year-old man was hit by as many as 17 gunshots and died in this “execution” perpetrated by suspected drug dealers.
The execution was committed Wednesday April 6 in region 231, where the driver of a vehicle was shot at 17 times by gunmen who intercepted him, while a young woman who accompanied the victim escaped unhurt. The incident prompted a “Code Red” alert and generated intense mobilization of the police forces and the army.
Unofficial sources revealed that elements of the Municipal Public Security Ministry and judicial officers managed to capture nine members of a drug trafficking cell, who had three guns and more than 100 doses of drugs in their vehicle.
This shooting attack was reported around 5:30 pm Wednesday at 123rd Street in the region 231, where the now deceased, identified preliminarily as Raul Gomez Valier, 29 years old, was driving a black Pontiac, accompanied by a 20-year-old woman.
At that moment, a white Corsa with plates from the Federal District cut in and blocked Gomez’s vehicle. Four men emerged, two of them with guns.
Raul Gomez threw his car into reverse to try to evade them, but the bullets went through the windshield of his car, which collided with a pole and a fence. Gomez died at the scene but his partner was unhurt.
Police did not specify how many wounds Gomez’s body presented, although they recovered 17 shell casings from the scene. The woman who was with him had a nervous breakdown, but was treated at the scene by paramedics from the Red Cross.
This situation generated an intense search operation by municipal police who conducted a search of a nearby rooming house, where they arrested five men and two women, who had three guns, uniforms with the initials PGJ (the abbreviation for the Attorney General’s Office) and more than 100 doses of drugs.
Two other suspects were captured in the Supermanzana 90, near the scene.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident around 1:30 pm Wednesday April 6, in the Supermanzana 20 numerous gunshots were reported, prompting another Code Red firearm emergency.
According to the Judicial Police, the incident occurred at a currency exchange house when five armed individuals allegedly attempted to rob the establishment.
Multiple police agencies responded to the incident and carried out investigations; in the area an operation was organized to find those allegedly responsible, but so far no arrests have been made.
In the same neighborhood, on Sunday April 3, agents of the Attorney General of the State (PGJE) recovered eight .380 caliber gunshell casings, after gunmen fired at a bordello, located on Jaleb street in Supermanzana 20.
For shooting at the facade of the bordello disguised as a spa, the authorities opened the detailed affidavit 2024/2016 for damages against the property.
