Reaffirm marriage vows on a Mexican beach

For a number of years it has been popular for couples to stage wedding ceremonies in beach locations. Recently, another emerging trend is that couples renew their wedding vows during beach ceremonies in beautiful locations. The Riviera Maya is becoming one of the most important venues for this type of tourism.

There are three primary reasons that couples renew their wedding vows, according to huffingtonpost.com:

They didn’t have the wedding they dreamed of: Couples from days gone by may have elected to tie the knot with a Justice of the Peace because their parents shamed them due to a pregnancy or didn’t approve of their choice in mate. Or, what so many young people experience, money was tight.

The marriage has suffered emotional turmoil: Some couples have had more years that fall into the “for worse” category but manage to persevere, later they choose to recommit because reaching the “for better” side of their relationship deserves to be underscored by vow renewal.

A landmark anniversary is imminent: The celebration of a silver or gold anniversary is a popular time to honor a marriage by reaffirming commitment.

In the Riviera Maya and Cancun, a number of clergy, ministers and others are available to perform beach ceremonies. Now, a group of four bilingual Christian clergy have formed an association called Cancun Minister to specialize in officiating beach weddings and vow renewals.

“Our symbolic ceremony script is focusing on love, friendship, and commitment,” said Alejandro Monroy of Cancun Minister, in exclusive interview with The Yucatan Times. “Short and sweet. It can be with a religious touch, or none.”

Cancun Minister offers several ceremony formats, including:

  • Sand ceremony
  • Hand ceremony
  • Rose ceremony
  • Knot ceremony
  • Wine ceremony
  • Catholic Symbolism

Cancun Minister’s typical vow renewal ceremony follows this pattern:

  • Welcome opening
  • Charge to the couple
  • Declaration of consent
  • Wedding vows
  • Exchange of rings
  • Love poem (optional)
  • Wedding prayer
  • Pronouncement of husband and wife
  • Kiss the bride

Monroy advises couples to consider having a small vow renewal one day just to celebrate their love again.  “Nothing as formal as your wedding, but celebrating on the beach with close friends and family sounds lovely, doesn’t it?” he said.

“Renewing wedding vows doesn’t  imply that they were broken or expired; when you reiterate a promise, you’re just reinforcing that you’re going to hold to it, regardless of whether you’ve broken them or not.  It’s like saying “I love you” even when your partner already knows that you mean it,” Monroy added.

For first-time knot-tiers, Monroy said the standard order of Cancun Minister wedding ceremony script follows this pattern:

.       Welcome Words.

.       Reading.  This is a great opportunity for a friend or family  member to participate.  A poem, a bible script or something similar.

.       Charge to the couple (words of love, friendship and commitment to the couple).

.       Wedding Vows:  You repeat after me. Or you say your own.

.       Recognition  by  family  &  friends.

.       Exchange of Rings.

.       Signing of Marriage Certificate (symbolic) — Not Legal.

.       Pronouncement of Husband & Wife.

.       First Kiss as Husband & Wife.

.       Presentation of the new Husband and Wife.

Monroy noted that when we are in love, we are open to all that life has to offer with passion, excitement, and acceptance. “Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage.”

When you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible, he noted.

A great marriage is not when the ‘perfect couple’ comes together. It is when an imperfect couple learns to enjoy their differences. There is no more lovely, friendly, and charming relationship, communion or company than a good marriage, he explained.

“For a beautiful ceremony without a large fee attached, we offer the alternative to take you outside the hotel to the nearest public beach location,” he said. “We cannot get in at your hotel installations unless you are part of a wedding package with them and you pay a fee to bring your own outside service provider.”
