Eleven pregnant women are infected with the Zika virus, out of a total of 121 cases throughout Mexico, federal health authorities reported on Monday Feb. 29.
Most of the cases were identified in the states of Chiapas and Oaxaca, while none has been registered in Yucatan yet.
Out of the 11 pregnant women infected with the Zika virus, eight come from Chiapas, two from Oaxaca and one more from Veracruz, Federal Health Authorities stated.
The number of pregnant women infected has increased since mid February, when the federal Secretary of Health said there were only 80 cases of Zika, including six cases of pregnant women with the virus.
Even though it’s been said that this virus causes microcephaly, a condition marked by unusually small heads that can result in mental and other health problems, this has not been totally confirmed by health experts, according to the Minsitry of Health.
But the fact is that Brazil has confirmed more than 580 cases of microcephaly, allegedly related to Zika infections in the mothers. Besides, the government of that country is currently investigating more than 4,100 additional suspected cases of microcephaly.
