Two leading international manufacturers this year will come to Yucatan, with an investment of about two billion pesos (USD $110 million) and the generation of more than 1,100 jobs in the municipalities of Kanasín and Hunucmá.
The new jobs are projected to increase to more than 5,000 by 2020, as outlined in Yucatan Gov. Rolando Zapata Bello’s Third Annual Report delivered Sunday Jan. 17.
These huge investments in the industrial sector of Yucatan include the installation of an aluminum packaging factory of Envases Universales, in Hunucmá’s brewery complex, while Kanasín will witness the arrival of a plant of the German company Leoni, for the manufacture and export of automotive wiring harnesses.
At the end of Zapata’s third annual report, where these investments were announced, representatives of both companies offered press conferences to elaborate on their plans.
José Consencao, head of operations for the Americas, said Leoni’s Yucatan plant will be its first in Mexico. The company currently has plants in 31 countries.
Leoni plans to begin construction of this plant in July, with an initial investment of 350 million pesos (US$19 million), to start operations in 2017 with a thousand jobs. Production would be for auto companies General Motors, Ford, BMW and Audi.
Alberto Galvan Rodriguez, director of Envases Universales’s aluminum packaging division, said this year the company will invest 1,600 million pesos (US$88 million), to generate 170 jobs to establish a plant that would produce aluminum packaging. The plant will produce two billion aluminum cans yearly starting in 2017.
