True Stories of the Weird

Obviously, weird stuff happens. I am pretty certain that it happens to us all. Then we create our explanations… – sometimes weirder still – and we go on about our merry way. And that is okay, I guess.

I mean, what else is there to do?

Except for two things, I think.

I know we are ambivalent about sharing. We want others to know that something very weird occurred, but we also want them to believe our explanations. And though you might accept our little story, you rarely accept our explanations. Which is a little weird in itself, considering who it happened to.

I have had Out-of-Body experiences. There, I said it. The professionals insist they must be cranially-induced hallucinations.

No, they aren’t. When you do it, you know they aren’t.

Same with all the weird stuff. When it happens to you, you know that your explanation for it is truer than the alternatives offered by your friends. Yeah, you know exactly what they’re thinking. It’s in the smile.

Thus arises an ambivalence to tell.

The second thing is that these stories always come back to haunt us. They return.
