Meridanos are invited to feast on ‘super-sized’ Rosca de Reyes

The traditional “Rosca de Reyes”, a delicious pastry enjoyed by Mexicans to celebrate the feast of the Three Wise Men, will be “super-sized” for all Meridanos and visitors to enjoy starting at 6 p.m. Tuesday Jan. 5.

The event staged yearly by Merida city government and local hoteliers is billed as the Largest Rosca de Reyes in Southeast Mexico because the sweetbread extends an estimated 2.5 km (1.59 miles)  in Avenida Colon between Calle 60 and Paseo de Montejo.

To prepare this year’s Rosca required the participation of some 150 chefs and bakers who used approximately 13,500 eggs, 2,500 kg (5,511 lbs) of flour and 620 kgs (1,366 lbs) of candied fruit, according to City Hall.

Proceeds from the event will benefit local charities.

This year, the “super-sized” Merida Rosca could even challenge the gigantic one assembled each year in Mexico City’s Zocalo for the title of World’s Largest Rosca de Reyes, local promoters said.

The traditional Zocalo Rosca measures approximately 1.5 km in length, according to local officials.

If you attend the feast, you should be aware that traffic may be redirected on some streets in the vicinity of Calle 60 and Avenida Colon, starting late Tuesday afternoon.
