There is no risk whatsoever that the Mayan archaeological site Chichén Itzá will lose its designation as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, says the director general of Cultur, Yucatán’s culture agency.
Dafne López Martínez said the state is in close communication with the New7Wonders organization over preservation of the site.
The Mexican Association of Travel Agencies (AMAV) warned last week that there was a high risk of losing the designation due to the large number of vendors on the site, many of whom harass visitors.
López said Governor Rolando Zapata Bello is working with the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) to develop a plan to improve conditions at the site and offer better services to visitors.
She said AMAV’s Quintana Roo chief, Sergio González Rubiera, has agreed to work with the authorities to resolve the issues at Chichén Itzá. According to González, 70% of the 2 million people who visit the site each year do so by booking through AMAV’s member agencies.
It is not the first time Chichén Itzá has been criticized for the large numbers of vendors, believed to be more than 1,000.
Yucatán’s hotels association said in 2013 that tourists were complaining about being pestered by vendors, and that a prompt solution was needed. An association spokesman said such a solution would have to look at alternative opportunities for the vendors themselves, because what they want is to make a living.
