Thanksgiving celebrations are all about spending time with family and loved ones to be grateful for our blessings and that we are together for one more year. It is a time to show appreciation and also is about sharing a special meal, one that is filled with comforting and classic dishes. But how about spicing things up and add some Mexican flavors to your dinner?
We have some ideas that could become part of your family traditions, a few dishes that have true Mexican taste and would be a perfect addition to your Thanksgiving table… all of them or at least one of them. Let’s check them out.
Bean dip with chipotle
Mexicans love beans, in tacos, as soup or a side. The idea is to puree black beans with some cream and a touch of chipotle chili. This doesn’t even have to be too spicy, the chipotles provide a smoky and tangy taste to the dip and to finish off, sprinkle some Chihuahua cheese on top and warm in the oven; this would be a perfect starter with a few totopos (tortilla chips).
This is a classic Mexican comforting dish, it is a soup made basically from tomato and chicken broth, tortilla strips and garnishes such as panela cheese, avocado slices, guajillo chili and chicharrón – pork rinds. This warm and delicious soup could be a great option if you’d like to try something different.
Know cochinita pibil? Well the idea is to take those same ingredients to prepare the classic marinade with sour orange and achiote (Maya spice obtained from the seeds of the plant of the same name) and slow roast the turkey with this marinade… delicious!
Roasted potatoes with chorizo
In the Mexican cuisine, there’s a filling used for many preparations which consists of potatoes and chorizo. Why not make an upscale version of this by dicing potatoes and roasting them in the oven with some chorizo. Sure will make a delightful side dish for your dinner.
This is traditional street food in Mexico. Warm corn kernels with mayonnaise and cheese, but make your own variation of this by choosing what ingredients to mix with the corn. Another way to eat them in Mexico is with lime juice and chili powder.
A warm beverage couldn’t be forgotten, prepare traditional Mexican hot chocolate to finish up the meal with a sweet drink.
Pecan pie with cajeta and/or chocolate
Change up the traditional pecan pie and drizzle it with cajeta (cooked milk candy) and add little pieces of Mexican chocolate on top. Or try using a chocolate mix and then add the pecans on top.
A creative way to add Mexico to your table is to prepare simple tamales with some pumpkin puree, this way you’ll have your very own pumpkin tamales. Doesn’t it sound like a great idea?
