UNAM creates a new Science and Technology Unit in the state of Yucatan

The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) established a new Science and Technology Unit in the state of Yucatan, to coordinate academic work at the Sisal Academic Unit and its new facilities in the state Technology Park.

The unit will incorporate into a single organizational structure the Faculty of Sciences and the Institute of Chemical Engineering which are located in the Sisal Academic Unit, as reported by the News Agency of the National Council of Science and Technology (CONACYT).

In addition, it will manage the new units of the Faculties of Science, Chemistry and the incorporation of the Institute of Research in Applied Mathematics and Systems (IIMAS), which will be located in the Science and Technology Park of Yucatan.

The coordinator of the new unit, Xavier Carrara Chiappa, noted that one of the key actions to boost investigation and research in the state was the creation of the Science and Technology Park in Sierra Papacal and the integration of Yucatan’s Technological Research, Innovation and Development System (Siidetey), where the UNAM has a major stake.

The Science and Technology Park will also host the Yucatan Sciences Biodiversity Conservation Unit, featuring molecular biology laboratories, scientific collections and it will provide support for decision-making in coastal management.
