According to Riviera Maya News Website, Mexican Immigration authorities from the “Instituto Nacional de Migración” are making their rounds along popular business routes in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo.
A sub-delegation of the national Migration Institute (INM), has been randomly inspecting business along “Quinta Avenida” (Playa’s Fifth Avenue), in search of illegal foreigners. So far, INM officials have inspected 10 businesses. They say that it’s been detected that approximately 90 percent of the businesses along the popular street employ at least one foreign worker.
They report that on average, one person per week is forwarded to the Chetumal detention center for deportation. INM says that the largest concentration of foreign deportations occur with Italian, Argentinean, Israeli and Russian nationalities.
Immigration authorities have also been focusing on the residential area of Villas del Sol due to its popularity with foreigners.
The inspections are being carried out in response to numerous complaints from Mexican nationals who feel their rights are being violated. Officials explain that it is necessary to carry out the inspections because overstaying in the country is an offense.
There are eight employees within this INM unit that are responsible for carrying out business inspections in the city of Playa del Carmen. In turn, there are additional administrative staff that have connections to the consulates in Solidarity and Quintana Roo.
