Mérida breaks into Mexico´s “top 10” for business tourism

The Merida forum on LGBT issues was held at Siglo XXI Convention Center.

With 162 conventions and large business meetings, Yucatán is taking a place in the “top ten” regions for business tourism in Mexico.

Mérida and Yucatán are on track to host 162 business events with an economic impact of $635 million pesos (USD$38 million) in 2015.

From January to last August, according to Yucatan Secretary of Tourism Development, Saul Ancona Salazar, Merida conducted 121 conferences and conventions of national and international scope, with an attendance of 30,495 people and more than $335 million pesos (USD$20.2 million) economic impact.

If the 41 large business meetings scheduled from September to December are added, Merida will have 162 events in the year, an economic impact estimated at $635 million pesos and an attendance of 65,825 people.

Jorge Escalante Bolio, president of the Business Tourism Council of Yucatan (Cetur), said business tourism is the key to increasing overnight visitors who come to Merida and the Yucatan because the congresses, conventions and incentive meetings foster visitors who stay a minimum of three or four days, come prepared with a larger budget because they use more services, buy crafts and visit tourist sites in the state.

“If you want to increase the overnight visitors we have to keep betting and working to bring as many conferences and conventions as possible,” he said. “We always complain that the overnight is only 1.7 or 1.8 days. We must seek more such events “.
