The Regional Office of the State Police, based on the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, in the state of Oaxaca, reported that a Concepcion Rios Demol, a 43 years old woman, was arrested as responsible for crimes against biodiversity, after she was found in possession of at least 2000 sea turtle eggs.
Local authorities issued a press release explaining that, since the sea turtle is considered an endangered species, predation is criminalized.
The detention occurred Tuesday August 4th, around 6:30 am, on the coastal road near the Guelaguichi region, in the municipality of Santo Domingo Tehuantepec; where officers of the Oaxaca Public Safety Secretariat (SSPO) conducted a preventive search and Ríos Demol was found carrying the turtle eggs.
The detained was taken to the prosecution office of federal jurisdiction in the port of Salina Cruz, and her legal status is yet to be determined.
