In the city of Valladolid, one of the most important in the state of Yucatán; in a totally unexpected turn of events, 39 year old Alpha Alejandra Tavera Escalante, MORENA candidate for mayor, is currently winning the election with 36.51% of the votes, while Mario Peniche Cardenas of the PRI has 32.31%, and Antonio Alvarez Ruiz of the PAN has only 16.78%.
Alpha Alejandra Tavera Escalante is an extraordinary case in this election, since her political party, MORENA, which stands for Movimiento de Regeneración Nacional (National Regeneration Movement), is practically unknown in the rest of the Yucatecan municipalities.

The tragedy took place while Tavera Escalante and company were on their way to Merida to participate in a meeting with Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, leader and founder of MORENA.
