The Mexican airline Aeroméxico will add a third Mexico-Canada connection in December when it begins offering daily flights between Mexico City and Vancouver.
The company will operate a Boeing 737 aircraft with 124 seats on the new route, starting December 9. Flights will leave Vancouver at 11:20pm, arriving in Mexico City at 7:00am, and leave Mexico City at 6:00pm, arriving in Vancouver at 10:05pm.
Aeroméxico already flies from Toronto and Montreal to Mexico City.
The Vancouver airport has been named the No. 1 airport in North America for the sixth year in a row by the Skytrax World Airport Awards, a ranking based on passenger surveys.
Another Mexican airline, Interjet, will continue to work with the Sunwing Travel Group’s Vacation Express, a tour operator, with new flights to Mexican sun destinations out of Richmond, Virginia, and Charlotte, North Carolina. Those started operating in April and will operate through the summer. Some will be extended into the fall.
New flights will begin operating from Raleigh, North Carolina, on June 14.
Interjet and Vacation Express began working together last winter with weekly charter flights from Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio, Nashville, Newark and Pittsburgh. “Passengers loved the extra leg room, free snacks, two free checked bags, a ladies-only restroom and the state-of-the-art aircraft,” said Kevin Hernandez of Vacation Express.
Another daily flight between Mexico City and Los Angeles will begin operating June 4 when Alaska Airlines turns the route over to American Airlines. Alaska offers one flight a day; American plans to offer two.
The request to make the transfer, made to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) in February, was challenged by Delta Air Lines, which said it would offer three flights a day. The request was approved but only for one year, rather than the two the airlines wanted.
The DOT said as a result of a new air agreement between Mexico and the U.S. there could be “substantial changes in the market within the next year,” calling for “different regulatory treatment.”
