

MÉRIDA, Yuc.- Relatives of the deceased passenger of the Carnival Triumph Cruise arrived Thursday March 20th, during the afternoon to claim the body. The passenger, George Uthuppu (54) was a native of India with American nationality.
The body will be taken to the United States, where it will be buried in accordance with the family’s wishes.
According to the autopsy, the deceased was under the influence of alcohol at the time. The cause of death was multiple trauma and a burst liver, caused by falling 30 meters into the water. Drowning was ruled out as the cause of death.
Consular Procedure
The United States Consulate in Merida made the arrangements to repatriate the body.
The accident was registered on Tuesday 17th, at 9pm local time, 55 nautical miles (101.8 km) from Progreso. The body was recovered by the Mexican Navy the following day, at 6 in the morning, and was taken to the naval facilities of Yucalpetén. It was later sent to the Semefo in Mérida.
The Carnival Triumph had sailed from Progreso, where it had docked on Tuesday. It was heading to its point of origin in Galveston, Texas.

It was the cruise’s first trip to Yucatan after a five day absence, when it was replaced by The Carnival Magic.
- Two years ago, in February of 2013, one of the motors of the Carnival Triumph caught fire while it was traveling to Progreso.
- The rescue after the fire lasted several days and gave rise to horror stories about the ship.
- Some months later, the cruise had another incident when its moorings dropped while it was receiving maintenance.
