Passenger Dies After Falling Off Cruiser 55 Miles North of Progreso

On the night of Tuesday March 17th; 55 nautical miles (101.8 kilometers) northwest of Progreso, Yucatán; a passenger fell off the Carnival Triumph cruiser into the sea. The boat was heading towards the port of Galveston, Texas when the incident occurred. The Carnival activated alarms and a ship of the Mexican Navy came to the rescue.

On Wednesday March 18th, at 6:30 am the body was found . The passenger’s name, age, nationality and the circumstances of the fall are still unknown.

The Carnival Triumph, with more than 3,400 passengers (mostly “Springbreakers”), was on its way to Galveston after a stopover in Progreso.

As soon as the body was found by officers of the Mexican Navy Rescue Team, it was taken back to Progreso, where the formalities for repatriation will be made.

The incident led to the mobilization of staff from the US diplomatic representation in Yucatan.

It is noteworthy that the Carnival Triumph was coming back to Progreso after a five week absence.
