On May 22nd 350 canoers will set sail from Xcaret Park to Cozumel Island. The crossing will emulate the ancient prehispanic ritual performed by the Mayans. The event will be the ninth representation of the Travesia Sagrada Maya “Corazon de Guia” (guided heart).
According to Xcaret’s Park Chief of Operations, Elizabeth Lugo Monjarras, The canoes’ will depart at 6:00 AM on Friday, May 22nd and then head to Chancanaab Park, in Cozumel.
They will return the following day, Saturday 23rd, when the canoers will go back to Xcaret to complete their journey.
“Our goal in Xcaret is similar to last year’s; we are hoping that 5,000 people will attend the park in addition to the usual visitors. Meanwhile, Chancanaab Park has a 2,000 people capacity “ Lugo Monjarras concluded.
The preshipanic ritual had not been practiced for more than 500 years until 9 years ago when the Xcaret Company reinstated it through the Sacred Mayan Crossing. (Travesia Sagrada Maya “Corazon de Guia”)
