CANCUN, Q. Roo.- The producer of “Survivor,” Bruce Beresford-Redman, was sentenced to 12 years in prison last night, by Criminal Judge Victor Manuel Echeverría Tun, for the murder of his Brazilian wife Monica Burgos, although, the prosecutor requested an appeal because allegedly there is evidence for a maximum penalty of 50 years in prison.
Until last night, counsel for the producer, Carlos Alberto Grajales Betancourt did not know in what sense the judgment was delivered . -I was only aware of the verdict. The defense has 15 days to appeal direct relief against the sentence.-
Yesterday, the Attorney General of the State (PGJE) confirmed the ruling against the foreigner, who has nearly served three years in prison for the murder of his wife.
In April 2010 Brazilian Monica Burgos was found dead, decaying, in a sewage tanker of a hotel located on the road stretch Cancun-Puerto Morelos. Her husband Bruce Beresford, had reported her disappearance two days before.
The State Judicial Police (PJE) arrested him as the prime suspect, but after 48 hours he was released on reserves of law. Investigations found sufficient evidence to request an arrest warrant against Bruce. A year later, in 2011, the producer was detained in California, USA, and extradited to Mexico to respond for the alleged homicide of his wife.
The Social Rehabilitation Center in Cancun became embroiled in a scandal of indiscipline, corruption and destruction of evidence when Bruce Beresford, shooting with a camera his life in Mexican prison for a reality show of American television revealed the irregularities of the Mexican penitentiacy system.
