Holy week vacation begins Friday March 27, and the international airport of Merida is expecting 100,000 passengers during this period, tourism’s high season.

The regional director of ASUR Group, Héctor Muñoz Navarrete, reported that beginning Thursday March 26, Merida International Airport will be operating at its maximum capacity, due the influx of national tourists visiting Yucatan for the  tourist attractions, good weather, and Merida’s hospitality.

At the same time, college students will be returning to their hometowns to spend vacation time with their families.

The director projected an increase of 30% to 35% in passenger volume. Airlines such as Magnicharters, Viva Aerobus and Volaris increase the number of flights for the high demand for tickets to Mexico City and Merida.

Also increased are routes from Merida to Guadalajara and Monterrey, as well as Houston and Miami. “We estimate that from Friday March 27 to April 13 100,000 passengers will move though the system,”  said Muñoz Navarrete.

The regional director of ASUR also stated that “Monday 13 April 2015 is a crucial date for the Merida International Airport, since we are launching the first Milan-Mérida flight, the only direct flight from Merida to Italy.”

The aircraft carrier Blue Panorama leaves the Yucatecan capital bound for Milan on the same Monday at 10 pm.

A few days before the start of the Easter holidays, domestic and foreign tourists are already in evidence downtown.

Silvia Martinez, from the State of Mexico, said that the city is “beautiful”. But sometimes the hot weather can be annoying, she concluded laughing, “I am sweating all the time.”
