Embrace the Art Scene in Merida
For the third year, artists throughout Merida will open their private studios for one day only and allow the public in for a rare glimpse of their creative world. This year’s tour includes 25 artists, some of whose work is exhibited in galleries and museums around the world and others who are the up and coming faces of tomorrow’s art scene. If you are interested in art, this event is not to be missed. The Artist Studio Tour allows you to spend quality time discussing the creative process with each artist and if the mood strikes, you can pick up a piece for your home. You’ll find sculptors, painters, printmakers, photographers, papermakers and more in this talented group.
The Artist Studio Tour is on February 21, 2015 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.
This unique self-guided tour is a yearly fundraiser for the Merida English Library. Most of the studios are in Centro and easily accessible on foot. A few of the studios are further out, but well worth the effort to get there. If you buy your ticket in advance, you can plan your day. Some people choose to spend the day in Centro and enjoy walking from studio to studio. Others with cars start their day at one of the studios further out and work their way back to town. Still others leave the driving to someone else and have a taxi take them from door to door.
Win an etching by artist Ernesto Novelo valued at 2500 pesos
Ernesto Novelo, a well known Yucatecan artist who lives and creates in Merida, has had his work displayed at the MACAY and the Olimpo in Merida and all over the world, in such diverse countries as Austria, Ethiopia, and the United States. A curator and mentor, Ernesto Novelo has graciously donated three of his etchings, each valued at 2500 pesos, to help promote the Artist Studio Tour. All ticket holders are automatically entered into a draw to win one of the etchings.
Enjoy a Sangria along the way at Cantina La Negrita
Cantina La Negrita, on the corner of Calle 62 and 49 in Centro, is providing a complimentary Sangria or Agua de Sabor. Go for the cold drink, stay for the hot Cuban music and great food!
Due to the small space of some of the studios, only a limited number of tickets will be sold. Advance purchase tickets are 200 pesos and on the day of the event, tickets will be 250 pesos.
Tickets are on sale at Soho Gallery, Calle 60 #400A x 43 y 41 Centro; Galeria Eskalera, Calle 70 #474-bx 57 y 59 Centro; the Merida English Library, Calle 53 #524, x 66 y 68 from 9:00 to 1:00 Monday through Saturday; and the Slow Food Market, Calle 33 y Avenida Reforma (Calle 72) García Ginerés.
