With an initial investment of 2.2 billion pesos (146.8 million USD), Grupo Modelo announced the construction of a plant in the municipality of Hunucmá in the state of Yucatan, with a production capacity of 130 million gallons of beer per year.
The new Yucatecan brewery will expand business in the region, increase production capacity and create jobs, says the company.
This will be the eighth production facility of Grupo Modelo in Mexico and the traditional Yucatecan beers “Montejo” and “León” will be brewed there. Others like Corona, considered the foremost beer brand in Latin America with presence in over 180 countries, will also be brewed in the same factory.
According to the brewery, the investment will create 700 jobs during the construction phase, at least 400 direct jobs in its operational phase, plus thousands of indirect jobs that will significantly activate the local economy.
The CEO of Grupo Modelo and president of the Mexico Area Anheuser -Busch InBev ( ABInBev ), Ricardo Tadeu, declared “We return to Yucatán to produce Montejo and other brands in the portfolio. We are determined to boost the regional pride and preference of the Yucatecans”.
He said that the plant will provide a better service to the Southeast Mexico market, and in the near future will be a platform to export beer to other parts of the world from Puerto Progreso.
According to the manager, the factors that led Grupo Modelo to choose the Yucatan for this strategic project were its political, social and labor stability, also the availability of human capital with the proper academic and technical preparation.
The investment, which is still subject to federal, state and municipal permits, licenses and authorizations, will also bring other commercial activities to the region, such as retail outlets, the promotion of small and micro entrepreneurs, marketing, logistics and distribution services, all of which will benefit the population of Hunucmá and the entire state of Yucatan.
With these actions, ABInBev and Grupo Modelo reaffirm their commitment to Mexico and recognize the country’s competitiveness as a producer and exporter of beer.
