The 2015 Oscar nominations were released on Thursday January 15th, and to no surprise, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (we’re still looking for the sciences here) selected a predictable, uncontroversial lot of films to represent the year in movies. Critical and public favorites like Birdman, Boyhood, and The Grand Budapest all garnered their fair share of nominations.
Shocking no one, the Academy took the bait of films like The Theory of Everything and The Imitation Game, which each earned ample recognition.
While Selma received a Best Picture nod, director Ava DuVernay was not recognized for her powerful work behind the camera. Another notable snub was Life Itself, the Steve James helmed documentary on the life and times of beloved film critic Roger Ebert.
It seems every year the Academy, made up of predominately white, older men, continues to fade deeper and deeper into irrelevancy. As Marlow Stern, a poignant editor at The Daily Beast noted, today’s nominations included no black actors/filmmakers and no female filmmakers nominated for directing or screenplay. The Oscars appear to be hopelessly mired in the past.
Anyway, for those curious, here’s a full list of what went down:
