The city of Colima, capital of the state of the same name, is considered by its residents to be the best place to live in Mexico, according to the National Quality of Life Index.
Colima moved up from fourth place in last year’s results to knock out 2013 winner Querétaro, which placed third this year. The capital city of Yucatán, Mérida, moved from third place to second.
Other top-ranking cities were Aguascalientes, which jumped from eighth place to fourth, and Monterrey, which came in fifth. Durango made a big jump from 21st to 10th place.
Cities that fared worse on this year’s index were La Paz, Baja California Sur, and Mexicali, Baja California; the first went from fifth to 10th place and the latter went from 13th to 32nd. Ciudad del Carmen in Campeche dropped from 22nd to 41st, and the Federal District plummeted from 27th to 42nd.
At the bottom of the list was Chilpancingo, capital of Guerrero. On its heels were two municipalities in the State of Mexico, Ecatepec and Naucalpan.
The study is conducted annually by the polling firm Gabinete de Comunicación Estratégica and considers 10 factors:
- Public and private schools
- Citizen coexistence
- Historical places
- Natural beauty
- Quality of life
This year the survey was based on telephone interviews with 30,400 people.
