The arrest of José Luis Abarca and María de los Ángeles Pineda took place during the early hours of Tuesday November 4th, in a raid by Federal Police Special Forces at a private house in the low class neighborhood of Iztapalapa, southeast Mexico City.
José Luis Abarca, former mayor of Iguala, and his wife María de los Ángeles Pineda, wanted by Mexico’s federal government for the disappearance of 43 students of the Teachers Training College of Ayotzinapa, were arrested and taken to the Assistant Attorney General’s Office for Special Investigations on Organized Crime (SEIDO).
José Luis Abarca and his wife apparently rented a house in Iztapalapa, which was key to arrest the couple, on the run since September 30.
At a press conference on October 22, Attorney General Jesús Murillo Karam said that Abarca masterminded the killing of six people and the disappearance of the 43 students on September 26 in Iguala, Guerrero.
After a fruitless encounter with President Peña Nieto, the parents of Ayotzinapa asked the President to “tell them if he is going to be unable to do anything, because they are willing to employ other methods to find their children.” But this arrest will bring new hope to the victims’ relatives, so they can finally find out the whereabouts of their children.
