Trailer crashes and goes up in flames
Tragedy struck on the Mérida-Campeche highway this morning when a loaded trailer crashed into a bridge pylon and caught fire.
The accident occurred on Friday August 15th at 6:30 in the morning, under the bridge of the Xpetén bypass, when the vehicle, coming from the state of Queretaro and heading toward Merida, collided with a bridge pylon at full speed. The driver had apparently fallen asleep at the wheel.
The impact caused the heavy unit to erupt in flames in a matter of seconds, instantly killing the driver. Two Red Cross ambulances arrived on the scene within minutes, but could do nothing for the driver.
The stretch of highway was closed to traffic for more than three hours as forensics staff conducted an investigation.
