For this year, the Association of Vacation Resorts and Tourism (Acotur) foretells sales for up to 650 million US dollars in timeshare properties, in its 38,300 rooms of specialized accommodation in Cancun and the Riviera Maya.

This amount would represent an increase of 16.1% in relation to the record of 560 million US dollars from last year.

Mauricio Carreón Lavalle, president of Acotur, explained that this dynamism derives from the sustained growth of the industry both in the number of rooms and occupancy, which averages 86% throughout the year.

“Cancun and the Riviera Maya maintain their leadership as the main tourist destinations in Mexico and Latin America in the segment of vacation clubs for their high quality standards, opening new resorts and creating more innovative marketing models that will allow them to continue growing in the present year, “he said.

According to data from Acotur, there are 208 developments in the Cancun-Riviera Maya corridor that account for around 60% of the sales of this vacation industry in the country, with more than 140,000 weeks sold for an amount of 2.6 billion dollars, which positions Mexico as the main timesharing destination in Latin America and second worldwide, just below the United States.

The timeshare regime consists of the provision of the right to use and enjoy a vacation property during a specific period, normally recorded in weeks.

The number of developments that commercialize timeshare in Mexico, according to Acotur, increased by 4% at an annual rate during 2017, while the sales of memberships rose 7.6% after exceeding 240,000 weeks, especially among foreign tourists who acquired 194,000 weeks (80.8%) with an average membership price of $ 18,576 USD.

Carreón Lavalle indicated that the growth pace will continue at least for the next three years, so more there will be more investment in this hotel modality in Mexico and particularly in Quintana Roo.

The Posadas Group has two complexes under construction at Chemuyil, one of which is the Live Aqua Urban Resort and a Fiesta Americana that totals 250 villas in a timeshare scheme. Besides, a new hotel is being developed, featuring 150 units with the Casa Blanca brand in the continental zone of Isla Mujeres, and this same chain has a contract for the construction of at least three other hotels in Quintana Roo.
