During the first semester and the beginning of the second semester of 2018, Yucatan continues positioned as the safest of the 32 states in Mexico, although in the last few weeks at least five intentional homicides were committed.

According to the database of the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System, up to the last day of June in Yucatan there were 6,214 complaints of common law, a figure well below the same period of the first six months of 2017, when the State Attorney General’s Office (Fiscalía General del Estado: FGE) registered 17,286 cases.

It was reported that last June the FGE received 916 complaints, which means that they opened an average of 30 investigation files per day.

However, Yucatán is not the state with the lowest number of official complaints. The Prosecutor’s Office of Campeche has 1,050 files open, while Nayarit reports 2,361. Tlaxcala 3,285 and Yucatán comes in fourth place with 6,214.

The State of Mexico and Mexico City are the states with the most complaints received: 132,366 and 111,250, respectively.

The homicide rate in Yucatán is still the lowest in the entire country, with 1.09 per 100,000 inhabitants, while Campeche has a rate of 3.7 and Quintana Roo, the most violent in the Peninsula, has a rate of 20.2 homicides per 100,000 people. Quintana roo registers 303 executions relaed to organized crime groups.

In Yucatan, until the last day of June there had been 19 fraudulent deaths. To these should be added the five registered in July and one that is still pending, that of Tzucacab, where a man was killed by the state police.

The figures related to the crime of burglary were also reduced compared to the same period in 2017; 771 were registered during the first six months of last year, while only 576 have been recorded this year’s first semester.

It is worth mentioning that in one case a man was stabbed to death and in other one a woman was seriously injured.

During the first half of this year, there has been a total of 1,033 complaints for theft.

  • 38 cars
  • 144 motorcycles
  • 168 businesses
  • 66 pedestrians

Although Yucatan has the best safety rating, when it comes to deaths from traffic accidents the statistics indicate that 53 motorcyclists, 23 pedestrians, 22 passengers, 19 cyclists and 10 drivers have been killed in traffic accidents.
