Mosquitoes are out of control in Mérida

“There are literally thousands of mosquitoes threatening the health of the Yucatecan families”, assured Juan Muñoz, a native of Hunucma, that resides in downtown Mérida, in an interview with The Yucatan Times.

During the summer vacation period, many people from Mérida go to spend the holidays at the beach, and citizens report that a large number of mosquitoes can be found on the coastal area as well.

Muñoz mentioned that the mosquitoes are totally out of control, and he has not seen absolutely any fumigation vans around downtown Mérida, a situation that in previous years was common to see all over the city during these dates .

The interviewee stressed that this situation worries him because there could be an epidemic of the diseases transmitted by these insects, such as Zika, Dengue or Chikungunya.

Although the Health Ministry has not reported increases in the aforementioned diseases, Juan Muñoz states that the authorities must begin to take the necessary measures (such as fumigation for example).

“It seems like local authorities are focused on the Influenza outbreak, and they are forgetting that there are other diseases that may also affect the population,” Muñoz concluded.
