IMSS invests 570 million pesos in Yucatan

Yucatan, Mexico — Mexico’s Social Security Institute has invested 570 million pesos (27.5 million USD) in clinics and medical equipment in Yucatán.

On May 29, the General Director of the Mexico Social Security Institute (IMSS) Tuffic Miguel, announced the construction of the first cancer registry center, a breast clinic and two family medicine units.

On a work tour in which he inaugurated the Center of Ophthalmological, he announced the purchase of new medical equipment which includes a linear accelerator, angiograph, magnetic resonator and masthograph.

He says that the new equipment will help increase the productivity of preventive breast cancer care, with more than 380,000 mammograms per year. The Mexican Social Security Institute reports that the 570 million peso investment will serve 1.8 million people.

While in Merida, Tuffic Miguel said that the cancer center is the first of its kind at the national level and is endorsed by the World Health Organization to train oncologists in the country on different malignancies.

Accompanied by Delegate Jorge Herberto Méndez Vales, he also launched the Ophthalmological Center of Excellence in the Ambulatory Care Medical Unit of the IMSS, which will provide care to eye complications such as cataracts, affectations to the retina due to diabetes and ocular hypertension, in addition to surgeries.

With this new center, waiting times will be shortened from six months to just one day to perform surgical procedures.

Tuffic Miguel toured the Ophthalmological Center of Excellence consisting of two surgical rooms, two offices and an ultrasound module where operations for cataracts, vitrectomy, photocoagulation of the retina and other laser procedures will be performed. The facility will provide an estimated a 9,000 treatments per year.
