K9 team discovers body of fifth victim in rubble of Merida building collapse

MÉRIDA — The State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) reports that rescuers have recovered the body of a fifth worker who died as a result of a building collapse that occurred at a construction site in Merida’s northern hotel zone Monday Dec. 4.

Rescue efforts implemented by the K9 Squadron of this agency involved intensive work by canine agents Dexter, a Dutch shepherd, and Samo, a Malinoan Belgian shepherd, both specialists in the detection of bodies on land and water, as well as their human partners.

The victim was located buried in the rubble of the disaster, which occurred at the Paseo 60 project, under construction on Calle 60 near Avenida Colon.

In the tasks was highlighted the full coordination between the K9 Squad of the Prosecutor’s Office with elements of the fire brigade and paramedics, both of the State Secretariat of Public Security (SSP) who worked tirelessly from the day of the events.

Elements of the Forensic Medical Service (Semefo) of the Institute of Expert Sciences of the FGE moved to the place to perform the legal removal of the body and take it to their facilities, where the corresponding necropsy protocol will be performed to determine the cause of death and proceed to its identification.

The Attorney General’s Office said that it continues with the research work to determine the causes of the incident and the proper determination of  responsibilities for the building collapse and workers’ deaths.
