The hotel infrastructure of Mérida is growing rapidly with 32 lodging projects to conclude in 2018…

MERIDA – By now 32 new lodging centers are under construction, expansion or administrative process in Merida, according to the permits issued by the Urban Development Department of the City Council.

For example, in the real estate complex MID Center, located at the corner of the Prolongación Paseo de Montejo and Villas La Hacienda avenues, another 140 hotel rooms are under construction, which will operate as part of the Fiesta Inn chain, and on Colón avenue is located the metal structure where the Hotel Wayam by Xixim is taking shape (stopped temporarily).

According to information provided by the director of Urban Development, Aref Miguel Karam Espósitos, until last September he had authorized 24 hotel construction licenses in Merida, of which 17 are new lodging establishments that will provide 1,534 rooms to the sector, and 7 are existing hotels which will be expanded or renovated.

These projects will increase in 332 new rooms, but with the rooms of the new accommodation centers and expansions, the hotel offer will add 1,856 new rooms available next year.

Another 8 hotels are in the process of getting permits and some already have a land use license or are in the process of obtaining a building license. These hotels that are in process would occupy an area of 99,644 square meters and would also increase by 500 or 700 the number of additional rooms.

Of the 32 hotels approved or in process, four have already started operations or are close to doing so, since they have already processed the completion of the project.

Aref Miguel Karam Espósitos, director of Urban Development, informed that of the hotels in process, 56% are in the area of historical monuments (Historic Center and Paseo de Montejo), 15% in areas of cultural heritage of Merida, 26% in North zone and Peripheral road, and 3% in the airport area. It is estimated that all this new hotel infrastructure, which is under construction or under review, would increase by 2,350 the number of rooms and generate an investment of 1,510 million.
