PLAYA DEL CARMEN — A Canadian woman has died after being hit by a car while crossing a road outside a hotel in Playa del Carmen.

The accident occurred Monday afternoon Dec. 4, outside the Ocean H10 hotel in north Playa del Carmen. Authorities say the woman and her husband, who were visitors to the area, were crossing the road when the woman was struck by an oncoming car.

Witnesses said that the couple were crossing the road pulling their suitcases, heading toward a waiting van on the other side, when the accident occurred.

The woman died at the scene. Other than her Canadian nationality, no other details were released Monday.

It’s about time we campaigned for awareness of basic traffic civility here. In both Cancun and Playa del Carmen you see people having to run when crossing streets (and that includes the hotel zone). Isn’t it a mark of civilisation to have safe pedestrian crossings and stringent driver’s license requirements?
Have there been campaigns of this kind in the past and, if so, have there been interviews with the authorities too?

My husband and I were heading to fly out of Cancun when we had to divert around this horrific scene. Our cab driver said that this happens more often than it should. I understand that PDC isn’t the US but to have to run across a major highway to catch transportation is too much of a risk to take to make a flight or go anywhere. My prayers and heart are heavy with this family I will never forget the picture of this poor women laying in the road or her husband screaming in agony for somebody to help. I agree with the previous comment, for the amount of tourism from all over the world some sort of pedestrian crossing needs to be put in place in these hotel districts.

My mother and I who were traveling in a Taxi heading to Playa also came across this horrific accident and we just wanted to get out and hold the man that was in distress. We have been praying for her family and can’t imagine what they are going through. It haunts me having this image in my head and I would just like to send out a heartfelt sympathy to her husband and her family. It’s sad that there are not descent walk ways between the heavily used hwy. This sort of thing is happening more and more is what our taxi driver told us. we said a prayer and shed a tear for her and her husband. RIP

I can’t help but come back to this article every day since we saw her laying on the ground uncovered. It was such a sad, sad scene. Our taxi driver also told us the same, this is happening a lot more often as it should. For them to say that makes me so upset knowing that people are aware of this happening and they have not done anything to help this situation. I have not been able to get the picture out of my head and have been praying and praying non stop for her, her husband, her family/friends and everyone of us that saw her and her dear husband in so much pain.

It’s nice to see the comments by others here. My thoughts go out to her husband, her family, and her friends too – wishing you hope, strength, and peace during this difficult time.

This man is a friend of mine and I just heard about this this morning as I just got back from Mexico on Friday. They are charging him with jaywalking. Why?

That is absurd that they would charge him after losing his wife! That is terribly sad. They were crossing hwy 307, which is a very, very dangerous highway to cross. They should not have been crossing and the Taxi driver should have picked them up at their hotel. The highway is literally a straight shot, which means cars feel pretty comfortable going way above the speed limit. What happened was very unfortunate and it’s a shame they are giving her husband something else to worry about.

This tragic and heart-breaking story is just another example of the many reasons why Canadians (and the world) should boycott countries such as Mexico and send a clear message that corrupción will not be tolerated.

On the surface this appears to be another tragic pedestrian incident, in an ever increasing number of such, but dig a little deeper and you find yourself asking some pretty basic questions in this poorly and under-reported story.

Who is the driver of the vehicle and what if anything has she been charged with?

According to other reports…
Why was the husband taken into custody?
Why has he been charged with a pedestrian violation?
Why is he still being held in jail?

Let’s just get to the point…

Director de la Policía , Playa del Carmen what is your ransom fee for this man’s safe release, so he can return home to his friends and family and mourn the loss of his wife?

These are very good questions and I had no idea about the things you posted….what in the world in Jail for Jaywalking? Something is going on. I couldn’t figure out why they had the vehicle covered but not the poor lady’s body when we passed the accident. I will never understand the Mexican government. I think our future trips will take us elsewhere as well. Still thinking of this family.
