Construction is expected to start early next year on the ambitious project to transform the lands of “La Plancha” into an urban park like Central Park in New York or Chapultepec in Mexico City….

MERIDA — In January 2018, promoters hope to begin operations to develop a New York Central Park-style “Urban Park” in Merida, after the State Government signed an agreement with National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), so that this institution opens a center of investigations in this place.

According to Guillermo Cortés González, head of the Technical Secretariat for Planning and Evaluation (Seplan), the project, which will be located in the area known as “La Plancha”, will start in January next year based on what is scheduled in the State Master Plan.

“On Thursday October 12 what the State government did was reach an agreement  to entitle the UNAM as one of the institutions that is part of the project. That means the University is not only part of the rescue project but also will invest resources directly to the project,” said the official.

The park construction will take place along with the “relocation” of the railroad station, that will be transferred to the Rail Operations Center (COF), which is being built in the municipality of Umán, which is also scheduled in early 2018.

He recalled that last April the State received a document containing the “La Plancha” Master Plan, presented by about 500 people from civil society, who received training from the UNAM; as the main promoter of the rescue of the area, through the University Program of Studies on the City.

The head of the Seplan stated that the objective is to build a sustainable park that could be compared to Chapultepec in Mexico City and Central Park in New York. He said that he is working to finish the whole plan by the end of 2017.
