141 suicides have been registered in Yucatán so far this year, according to Prosecutor’s Office….

MERIDA — According to the state health authorities, cases of suicides in Yucatan have declined by 29% so far this year.

The Prevention and Health Protection director from the Yucatan Health Secretariat (SSY), Manuel Jesus Paredes Aguilar, indicated through August 31, there is a record of 41 suicides less than in the same period of 2016: 132 vs. 173.

According to the official, this means a decrease of 29%, reflecting the joint effort to prevent such cases.

The figures were released on Monday September 11, during the commemoration of the World Suicide Prevention Day, which was Sunday September 10 in the auditorium of the Faculty of Medicine of the Autonomous University of Yucatan.

The event also highlighted the importance of journalists and media to prevent further suicide.

Also presented were the first results of the campaign “Live happy, live healthy”, which last March was launched by Governor Rolando Zapata Bello, with the participation of consultants from the World Health Organization (WHO).

Paredes Aguilar stressed that this reduction is part of the joint effort of the most representative institutions of society, under the coordination of the Mental Health deputy director Manuel Ruiz Mendoza, and the interinstitutional table created just over two years ago.

He also recalled that this strategy, which had the support of WHO and the Pan American Health Organization, included the elaboration of the State Program for Prevention and Attention to Suicidal Behavior.

Miguel Ángel Viveros Erosa, Coordinator of Special Programs of the Mental Health Vice-directorate, said that of the 132 cases of suicides this year, 75% are men and the rest are women. He stressed that last year was the highest rate of men: eight to one, more than 80% were men.

Likewise, he emphasized that during this year only one case of a minor has been presented. For its part, the deputy director of Mental Health of the SSY said that journalism is an important tool to combat this evil and with the support of reporters they will transform the culture of the state and the figures in that area will be different from those presented in years above.

In contrast, the Attorney General’s Office announced that with the suicide of a man yesterday in Conkal, so far this year the number of suicides reached 141.

The difference with the SSY data is due to the fact that the Attorney General Office handles directly with daily updates the cases that are registered in the state, whereas the Health report is until August 31.
