Vehicles owners now will have to demonstrate the good condition of their vehicles….

MERIDA — The Yucatan chief of the Secretariat of the Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) announced last weekend that he is awaiting instructions from the central offices to develop the process of vehicle verification that for the first time will be mandatory for all car owners. However, he affirmed that in Yucatan there are no problems due to the “thinning of the air” by car pollution.

“We will be aware of the instructions and what the procedures and participation of the state delegation will be. It is important for motorists to be attentive; I believe that Yucatecan society is very mature and very participatory in matters related to the environment,” said the head of the unit, Jorge Carlos Berlin Montero.

“We expect a very good participation in addition to the fact that the conditions of the State have generated the liklihood that the vehicles are in very good condition or in the best condition. We hope it is a further process and that the citizens participate,” he said.

According to the website of the Ministry of the Environment of Mexico City, vehicle verification is a program that applies to all registered motor vehicles, which must carry out and approve each semester the vehicle emissions test, except for vehicles that obtain a double zero hologram “00”, in which case the unit will be exempt from the procedure for up to three subsequent semesters.

At the local level, vehicle verification has been carried out only for public transport, and if any individual wishes, it is on his own.

Vehicle verification will be mandatory in 16 states of the country, including Yucatán

In this regard, the delegate of Semarnat, Carlos Berlin Montero, said that what is sought is that the entire vehicle fleet of the State meets the necessary requirements not to pollute the air and the environment.

In Yucatan, the Department of Urban Development, through its Directorate of Environmental Management and Conservation of Natural Resources, is responsible for verifying emissions of gases emitted by motor vehicles, but only for public transportation, private cargo or passengers (conventional bus, minibus, van and taxi in the individual and collective mode).

On December 31, 2016, the notice of the Vehicle Verification Program 2017 was published in the Official Gazette of the State of Yucatan, which began on January 2 and ends on December 31 of this year. It is divided into two periods, per semester, according to the numbers in which the plate ends.

According to the calendar, this month is the turn of the 3-4 and in September the 5-6. The cost for this process is the equivalent of three units of measurement and updating (UMA), that is, about $226 pesos.
