CANCUN — During a security operation in different bars in the downtown area and hotel zone of Cancun, more than twenty women of several nationalities were taken before the National Institute of Migration (INM) authorities, in order to determine their legal immigration status and to investigate assertions that all the detained women were alleged victims of forced prostitution.
On the evening of Saturday August 5th and the early morning hours of Sunday 6th, federal, state and municipal police officers, accompanied by other staff from other government agencies raided night clubs with a warrant to detect any irregularities.
The operation aimed at dismantling a human trafficking network that allegedly kept young women from Venezuela, Argentina, Colombia and Cuba working as prostitutes against their will.
A young woman arrested in a hotel at Cancun’s “Supermanzana 23” last week declared that she was sexually exploited and provided information that subsequently led to find other young women apparently held captive in Cancun’s hotel zone.
Although the exact number of detainees is still unknown, an anonymous witness informed the alleged responsible were placed under custody of the General Attorney of Justice in this city, while the women were taken before the inmigration agency, which is currently investigating their immigration status in México.
It was also reported that those who can’t prove legitimate residence in this country could be deported to their home nations.
