Yucatán, Mexico’s pioneer in clean energy

MÉRIDA — According to El Debate newspaper, the arrival of nine energy projects — four wind farms and five photovoltaic solar energy proposals — will contribute to the so-called reindustrialization of the state. By 2018, Yucatan will become the country’s first clean energy producer.

However, although the investment is quite strong [25 billion pesos] and it will generate a good economic impact in the state, not everything is positive; the installation of these wind and photovoltaic parks will certainly generate some complications.

In the last Energy Forum conducted by Cinvestav Mérida, Rodrigo Patiño Diaz Ph.D. mentioned a series of problems that the state would face when installing these clean energy generating plants. Among them are: generation of noise by wind turbines, electromagnetic interference, deforestation, and serious damage to underground hydrological systems and biodiversity.

The specialist pointed out that although it is known that the Secretariat of Energy organizes a public consultation with the inhabitants of the localities where it is planned to install wind and photovoltaic parks, there is not much information on the agreements reached.

According to a study carried out by the Spanish company AleoSoft, even though the production of wind energy does not generate toxic gases nor hazardous waste, and does not contribute to the greenhouse effect, some of its effects and collateral consequences require some attention, since the use of this type of energy affects the environment. He noted its negative effects on the flora, fauna and soil where the parks are installed.

However, studies indicate that these problems can be addressed and minimized through adequate planning, taking into account that the effect on land use of wind farms depends on the site where they are set up.
