Mérida’s O’Horan General Hospital has been placed in second national place among the hospital centers with greatest multiorgan procurement activity,  El Debate newspaper reported.

MERIDA — The State Transplant Center of Yucatan (CEETRY) has been operating for the past 6 years. It pursues three fundamental objectives: increasing the culture [and familiarization] of organ donation; promoting and monitoring that all procedures are done under the health law’s principles, and accelerating the quality and quantity of organ transplants in the state.

Mérida’s General Hospital “Agustín O’Horan” was ranked in second place in the country among the hospital centers with more multiorgan procurement transplants (several organ donations performed at the same time), competing against prestigious institutions such as the National Medical Center Siglo XXI in Mexico City and the Western Medical Center in Jalisco. Although being proud of the extent of achievements of the CEETRY, its director and a transplant surgeon, Jorge Martínez Ulloa Torres, is not satisfied when facing the numbers of surgeries performed.

The most common organ transplants that this public institution regulates are: Corneal, from 2011 to 2017, around 70 surgeries have been carried out; Kidney, exceeding 2002 – 2010 numbers [10], from 2011 to 2017, 110 patients have undergone this type of procedure; Liver, it is classified as one of the most important transplants in the state, since just in the first half of 2017 seven surgeries have been performed.

Ulloa Torres stated that these are all the results of an effective chain collaboration between companies and medical institutions from Yucatán.
