According to Yucatán Healthcare, Mérida is the center of the Yucatan Peninsula in not only cultural and economic areas, but also in healthcare. Surgeries performed here can save you from 40% up to 60% compared to the same procedures in the United States.
Yucatan has a high-level infrastructure for health care. With a large network of public and private hospitals, clinics, laboratories, all constantly growing and modernizing, Yucatan offers highly specialized medical care, as it concentrates the highest number of specialists in Mexico’s Southeast. Clinics and hospitals such as Centro Médico de las Américas (CMA), Clínica de Mérida, Star Médica, and Videre (Eye clinic), are just a few examples of private and excellent service provided in Merida.
By 2015, Mexico had 9 Joint Commission International (JCI)-accredited facilities; however, none were in Yucatán. In 2018, the new opening of the hospital “El Faro del Mayab”, will be the first JCI-certified healthcare center in the Southeast, which will allow foreigners without insurance to make use of high-quality medical care. Likewise, Mérida has all the services that may be necessary for the patient, from specialty pharmacies to ground and air ambulance services, consulates, among others.

As mentioned in a previous article TYT published in April this year, Juan José Ramírez Zapata, president of the Hospital’s Council, explained to Governor Rolando Zapata that the new space, located in the Santa Gertrudis Copó colony, is expected to start operating in April 2018. The hospital will be the most important in the region, in addition to complying with all hygiene, safety and space standards required by the Joint Commission International.
As reported in 20 minutos newspaper, Saúl Ancona Salazar, Secretary of Tourism, mentioned that the construction of the new hospital “El Faro del Mayab” will offer high specialty services, which will help consolidate Yucatán as a medical tourism center in the southeast of the country. The new medical unit will have 25 specialties to treat both Mexican and foreign patients in Merida. The tower has 9 floors, 88 offices, two operating theaters, and 66 beds for hospitalization of patients. All services will be of high-quality and certified in their processes. Likewise, emergency assistance, blood bank, clinical laboratory, MRI scanning, surgery, intensive therapy, gynecological surgeries, endoscopies and pathological anatomy services will be provided. Moreover, this building will also count with areas such as administration, teaching, rehabilitation, and hemodynamic.
