The destination will benefit from the routes from Asia to Mexico City.

CANCUN — The Cancun City Tourism Director, Francisco López Reyes, anticipated that by the end of this year Cancun International Airport will close with a historic figure of 23 million passengers and with at least four new air routes that show the profitability that the city continues to have as a tourist destination.

The new routes already confirmed are Fort Lauderdale-Cancun, Nashville, Tennessee-Cancun and St. Louis-Cancun, operated by Southwest Airlines, as well as new flights from Baltimore and Chicago operated by Spirit Airlines beginning this month.

In addition, VivaAerobus will implement the Querétaro-Cancún flight, which will further increase connections with major cities in the interior of the country, the official said.

He added that Cancun will also indirectly benefit from the three new flights from Asia to Mexico City through ANA and China Airlines, as a significant percentage of Asian tourism in Mexico visits the Mexican Caribbean.

“There are more than 60,000 Asians arriving each year, and I believe that with these flights there could be an increase of even 50% in the country, and for Cancun the increase could be 20%,” he said.

He recalled that the airport of the city grows at a rate of 10% per passenger volume annually, so that this year the figure could overpass the 23 million visitors in the Mexican Caribbean.
