Wilma Garrido and her donors offer food in the irregular settlements of south Merida.

We have all gone through a time of economic difficulties in life, and this was the reason why Doña Wilma Beatriz Garrido Castillo, despite her humble condition, disinterestedly decided to do something for her neighbors who live in irregular settlements in the south of the city.

At her home she set up a dining room where she daily offers food rations at seven pesos, a sum that serves to buy some pork or chicken.

“It is not necessary to be rich to share with others a little, here there is a lot of poverty, a lot of difficulties, moms with children who do not have family expenses, or there are women whose husbands are not employed, and we try to help them in what we can,” she explained.

She revealed that on one occasion she was in need, and there were always people who did not abandon her, “since my husband could not work because he had open heart surgery and there was nothing to eat at home”.

It has been three years since this good work began, first supporting five families, now 70, who come with their recipients to find their food ration and soft drink, for which they pay only seven pesos. Much of what is required to fill the three steam cookers in the kitchen is obtained from fruit and vegetable shops that donate surplus produce, as well as from people who have learned of the work and who have joined in providing staples in a regular way.

Sometimes there is dinner

“Sometimes we provide dinner, and we have been able to do it thanks to an anonymous person who already sent in two or three times a little truck loaded with vegetables and several other products, among them milk powder and chocolate with which we prepare for the children.  The times I have tried to ask the person who brings these donations who sent it, he only responds that it was God,” Wilma explained.

At the moment the food is prepared under a canvas roof and a very damaged sheet. Although they have received money to buy a new canvas, it is not enough to install metal bases to support the shed. “We cook with firewood, and we want to see if people help us build our shed to prevent food from getting wet when the rainy season starts,” Wilma said.

Although the dining room has no name, it is known as “the one of Doña Wilma.” It is located at 179th Street between 90 and 92 Streets in Colonia San Antonio Xluch 3. If you want to join this work by donating food or anything else, you can call 999-907-0526 or 999-207-5074.
