CAMPECHE — Five complaints for looting and destruction of Mayan sites in Campeche were filed last year by the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH).
Jorge Alberto Aguilar Montero, head of the Department of Procedures and Legal Services, said that two robberies were reported in the south of the state, in the Mayan city of Xpujil. He mentioned that the robbery was presumed to be in a Mayan burial mound that contained ancient vessels, stones and vases. The other happened in the archaeological zone of Becán, where in a room, thieves tried to dig to see if they found anything.

In addition, the INAH reported the destruction of three mounds in Silvituc, during work on roads to harvest. He mentioned that this happens frequently, because the farmworkers themselves ignore these vestiges and with the machinery, they destroy them.
In many case also, the owners of the lands where these ancient ruins are located prefer to destroy them because they fear losing their lands.
Legal Services of the INAH said that all these allegations are being followed up, but so far there is no responsible person or indications of who carried out these acts of destruction and robberies.
