New Yucatan convention center nears completion

The new International Convention Center already has confirmed 10 meetings for 2018.

MERIDA — The Yucatán International Convention Center has previewed its dates available for 2018, which has resulted in the confirmation of 10 conventions and a fully booked schedule in November of that year with more than 15,000 attendees, which is expected to produce more than 165 million pesos in economic impact for the city.

During a tour around the building taken by Yucatan Governor Rolando Zapata Bello, he termed it a progressive work for its multifunctional design. The Secretary of Tourism Promotion (Sefotur), Saúl Ancona Salazar, reported that there are 10 international events scheduled for the next year, and 90% of them are for medical issues. The first event is expected to take place in March.

Also, the official said that on Thursday May 18 an event will be held to present this center to entrepreneurs of the tourist sector. With this officially will begin the stage of commercialization of its calendar available for congresses and conventions.

During the Governors visit to the project, which is the only one in Mexico built under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED-Gold) certification, it was explained that assembly is nearly complete of the entire structure’s metal and prefabricated concrete, as well as the retaining walls, columns and beams that support the building. Currently, it is in the process of internal equipment and service placement.

Entrepreneurs of the tourist sector and hotels located in the area and Gustavo Cisneros Buenfil, President of the Business Coordinating Council (CCE), were told that the International Congress Center has the capacity to hold up to four events simultaneously. It was built on an area of 57,000 square meters and today more than 50 percent of the building is finished, with activities to start operation in 2018.

In this regard, Gilberto Enríquez y Soberanis, director of the Institute for the Construction and Conservation of Public Works (Incopy), added that he is supervising the correct installation of electrical and sanitary equipment, as well as the air conditioning ducts.

The Governor, accompanied by Jorge Escalante Bolio, Presidents of the Tourist Business Council (Cetur), and Hector Navarrete Medina, president of the Mexican Association of Hotels (AMHY), visited the main hall with capacity for six thousand people which can be divided into six different rooms for one thousand attendees each and up to 12 with 500 each, with all the general services for large exhibitions.

Subsequently, in the upper floor the Governor visited an area of 560 square meters, with six offices for the organizing committee, two halls for two thousand people each, equipped with all the general services for any size of event, and two terraces for social gatherings with capacity for up to 700 guests each.
