The amendment to article 60 Bis of the General Law of Wildlife was endorsed by 242 votes in favor, 190 against, and was sent to the Senate for analysis.

The ruling also seeks to prohibit any activity involving these species, with the exception of conservation-oriented research, carried out by accredited higher education institutions.

The initiative of the deputy Javier Herrera Berunda (PVEM), establishes that the marine mammal specimens that are already captive can continue in this condition, “to fulfill each and every one of the purposes for which they received the corresponding authorization, provided that their physical integrity and health are guaranteed. ”

Likewise, it prohibits the introduction of new specimens in captivity, except those resulting from the application of the protocol for care of strandings of marine mammals and those that the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) ensures.

Well this is just another terrible blow to animal species (and our planet’s) conservation, preservation, and education. No one will protect what they don’t care about, and no one will care about what they have never experienced. In the end we will conserve only what we love; we will love only what we understand; and we will understand only what we are taught.

I wish more people would open their minds, think for themselves, and seek the truth about this reality instead of blindly following the agendas of animal rights extremist propaganda. What a crying shame that so many well-meaning individuals truly believe that accredited zoological and aquaria facilities are actually bad; as if the wild is all sunshine and rainbows. The damage to this phenomenal planet, our only home, is already being done and it will soon be too late to reverse it if people won’t even try to understand how wonderful supporting reputable and accredited places like these are.
