The most terrible effect that corrupt governors perpetrate on their states is the enormous patrimonial and political damage left behind, and a group of legislators is asking the Supreme Court of Justice to establish a jurisprudence with the case of former Governor of Veracruz, Javier Duarte.

“The saddest thing is the huge financial debt inherited and the social delay that can leave a bad governor in his state,” Senator Rosa Adriana Díaz Lizama added. “During this government, Veracruz made no advance. For the population, six years has passed with no positive effects. Veracruz lost in every sense and this can no longer be tolerated.”

On Tuesday, April 18, a group of senators from the National Action Party (Partido Acción Nacional, PAN, in Spanish), including Rosa Adriana Díaz, asked the Attorney General’s Office to take precautionary measures to prevent Karime Macías Tubilla, the former governor’s wife, from absconding from justice.

The legislators recalled that the Attorney General’s Office has said that Macias Tubilla is related to probable crimes and is credited with having acquired with money from the Veracruz treasury four residences in Houston, three luxurious apartments in Torre Pelicano in Boca del Rio and executive offices in Polanco in Mexico City.

There is an investigation conducted by the Taxes Adminsintration Service (Servicio de Administración Tributaria, SAT, in Spanish) that reported that from the first year in the Veracruz government in 2011, the wife of the then president spent 8 million pesos on clothing, articles and hotels, with an official credit card.

Karime Macías was in Guatemala with the former governor of Veracruz when he was arrested, but according to the Attorney General’s Office she was not arrested because there is no request for arrest against her.
