PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Q. Roo. — The mayor of the municipality of Solidaridad, Cristina Torres Gómez, confirmed the plans of remodelling of 12th Street in Playa del Carmen, where the Blue Parrot Bar used to operate. The plan is to give a new image to this part of the city that was struck by violent events that occurred on January 16 that left six people dead and at least 14 injured.

The Mayor mentioned that this business project is endorsed and supported by the current administration.

“The business sector has presented its concerns and they suggest that it is time to relaunch the destination by working side by side, both the economic sector and the government, improving the security measures of Playa del Carmen, and defining exclusive areas for certain recreational activities”, explained Torres Gómez.

She mentioned that the intention is that Playa del Carmen — in the municipal council of Solidaridad – will change its image to one in which security will be provided at all times to tourists and locals.

This proposal follows up the tragic events of January 16 that left six people dead and 14 injured in the Blue Parrot bar, where there was a shooting at the closure of the electronic music festival BPM.

Ricardo del Valle Prieto, secretary of the Association of Bars and Discotheques of the Riviera Maya, was the one who announced the project and thus justified the closure of multiple bars in the previous week, which clarified the rumor that closures were caused by organized crime.

He said that the owner of the property, which extends from 12th street North to the beach, has decided to build on that site a hosting center which will include an area designated for concerts.

The construction of this project is expected to start in June and it will be put into operation by the end of 2018.
