The Yucatan Times Editorial Board received this letter on Tuesday March 15th, and it is being posted in support to Saint Patrick’s Day  “Greening around the World on 17 March” global movement.

Letter to Mayor of Mérida, Lic. Mauricio Vila Dosal

Through this letter we contact you to let you know our plans for the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day.

St. Patrick’s takes place on March 17th each year and this year restaurant Hennessy’s Irish Pub (IRISH BAR, S. DE RL.L DE C.V.) organized a festival that will last from Thursday March 17th through Monday 20th, featuring activities such as live Irish music, traditional Irish food, gifts, t-shirts and more.

We are sending this letter to ask the state and municipal governments for their authorization to green light the Motherland Monument (Monumento a la Patria) located on Paseo de Montejo.

Every year on March 17th, more than 180 iconic locations around the globe do this to commemorate St. Patrick’s Day. Among them are the Eiffel Tower, the pyramids of Egypt, the Tower of Pisa in Italy, the opera house in Sydney Australia, and Cristo Redentor in Brazil, among others.

A letter was sent to us directly from the Irish embassy in Mexico City thanking us for the attempt to light the monument in green, in favor of the global movement known as “Greening”, which is also aimed to boost tourism worldwide.

If this objective is achieved, Mérida will be the third city in Mexico to join this important global movement.

The Irish ambassador says he would be honored to see Mérida among the images of “around the World on 17 March”.

I remain of you awaiting a response.
Atte.

New ‘greenings’ for 2016 will include 7 World Trade Center at Ground Zero in New York, the famous Big Wheel on Place de la Concorde in Paris, Mole Antonelliana in Turin (the architectural symbol of the city), the light rail system in Addis Ababa (the first light rail system in sub-Saharan Africa) and City Hall in Tel Aviv.
