Meridanos love their parades, and they were not disappointed by the one celebrated Friday Nov. 20 that commemorated the 105th anniversary of the Mexican Revolution of 1910.
Thousands of spectators jammed sidewalks surrounding the Plaza Grande to get a good view of more than 6,000 parade marchers, including many school groups, sports clubs and police and firefighters.
SWAT maneuvers by state police, acrobatic displays by motorcycle officers forming human pyramids, and firefighters’ risky ascension of tall ladders above firetrucks drew applause and cheers from parade viewers around the Plaza Grande.
But parade goers seemed most impressed by the presentations that represented events of the Mexican Revolution itself. One display recreated a famous raid by revolutionary followers of Emiliano Zapata and Pancho Villa on a train carrying army generals of dictator Porfirio Diaz, as happened in Torreon and Celaya.
To the delight of spectators, members of a state police riot squad costumed as guerrilleros and soldiers fought a brief “battle” in front of the state Palace of Government, with “gunfire” resounding and smoke from their rifles filling the air above the Plaza Grande.
Elite Yucatecan athletes who are competing in world championships led by diver Rommel Pacheco also were well received by spectators.
A sunny and warm afternoon provided an inviting backdrop for the parade, which started about 4 p.m. in the Paseo de Montejo, and concluded about 7:30 p.m. at San Juan Park. No incidents were reported besides traffic tie-ups due to many street closures in downtown.
Presiding over the event from the Palace of Government were Governor Rolando Zapata Bello; President of the State Congress, Celia Rivas Rodriguez; and President of the Superior Court, Marcos Celis Quintal, among other dignitaries.
