Microsoft Corporation plans to invest about USD $1 billion in Mexico in the period from 2015 to 2018 to promote the growth of small and medium enterprises through the use of IT, according to a statement by the Mexican government.
The statement was issued on Thursday October 1st, after a meeting between Mexico’s President Enrique Peña Nieto and the CEO of Microsoft Corporation, Satya Nadella. Additionally, Nadella confirmed the company’s commitment to supporting existing clusters in Queretaro, Aguascalientes, Jalisco, Guanajuato and Puebla.
The president’s office said in a statement that the two discussed Microsoft’s presence in Mexico over the next 20 years, along with its participation in telecommunications.
Following their meeting, they met with Microsoft scholarship winners from the Mexican Youth Institute, a federal agency that operates under the Social Development Secretariat and promotes education, health, employment and social inclusion on behalf of youth.
The move will strengthen the country’s computer workforce, and will provide the necessary infrastructure to develop future software designers for the country. Mr. Nadella also supported the Peña Nieto administration and expressed confidence in its abilities to bring about technical reforms in Mexico.
According to bidnessetc.com, this might just be a political stunt, but regardless, Mexico will benefit from Microsoft’s investment. The recent influx of Asian dominance in the tech industry, and the apparent lack of renowned Latinos in the tech industry, could change after this investment.
Microsoft has already started to lay out its plans for Mexico. It has provided technical know-how and expertise to a company known as SkyAlert, which started out four years ago, and now has 75 employees. SkyAlert is an earthquake detection service and works to detect seismic activity, and then passes the information to the general public.
